April is National Poetry Month!!
Taylor readers have been celebrating National Poetry month throughout the month of April. They have participated in many different fun lessons to gain more experience with poetry.
Kinder and First Grade were familiarized with poetry by having many different poems read aloud to them. They then learned more about list poems by hearing Shel Silverstein's poem Sick. They really enjoyed hearing all the silly reasons little Peggy Ann McKay couldn't go to school! Then they created their own Ouch! list poems. They did an awesome job!
Second Grade discussed how there are many different types of poetry-some that have a specific structure like a haiku or cinquain, and some that don't have a specific structure like a free verse poem. They then had several poems read aloud to them. Their favorite was There's a New Kid on the Block by Jack Prelutsky because of the interesting twist at the end.
Third grade learned all about Blackout Poetry and created their own Blackout Poems. They were amazing!!
Fourth-Fifth grades experienced Sticky Note poetry and created some awesome group sticky note poems! Then they tried their hands at Blackout Poetry and they all rocked those poems as well!
I'm so proud of how awesome our Taylor Readers have done experimenting with poetry!!!
Next up Second and Third grade will be trying their hand at a Poetry Digital Breakout in the library.
